The Abundant Futures Design Lab at MASS Design Group is pioneering a holistic design approach to architecture that is aligned with nature to create a healthier, more resilient future for people and planet.
Their approach views nature as a resource to be intimately involved in the structure–by enhancing natural light, passive ventilation, and utilizing hyper-local sustainable materials, they improve building performance and community prosperity simultaneously. Projects like the revitalization of the Fall Kill in New York and Rwanda's Nyarugenge District Hospital demonstrate how architecture can support both ecological and social well-being. Their work highlights how buildings can be designed to not only provide shelter–they can actively regenerate ecosystems and promote human flourishing.
“We need to heal as quickly as we have destroyed. We need to reconnect with place—where we build and grow, but also where we extract and harvest. We need to imagine and tell the story of the future that we want and demonstrate it with metrics of healing. One way or another, the future is going to look very different. But what if it was better than it has ever been? Why not?”
